Darmiyaan: In Between is the title of a 1997 Hindi movie directed by Kalpana Lajmi. Starring Kiron Kher, Arif Zakaria and Tabu, its story was set in the 1940s. An actress from Bollywood discovers that her son is transgender.
Not many know that Shah Rukh Khan was offered the rare role of a eunuch. He said yes to the role in no time, a brave choice for a superstar even by today's standards. Due to unavoidable delays in materializing the project, SRK's dates were missed. Eventually, a less-known actor named Arif Zakaria played the role.
"It was so brave of Shah Rukh to make that decision in a split second. He didn’t hesitate for even a moment when he heard the subject. How many superstars would agree to play a transgender?" said Kalpana Lajmi in an interview (as quoted by Times Now).
Had Shah Rukh Khan played the transgender role in Darmiyaan, it would have been a great addition to his filmography.
