Responding to a prompt asking users to "Name a movie everyone swears is a masterpiece but you found it to be garbage," the thread quickly became a forum for dissent, challenging the hallowed status of some of cinema's most revered works.
One of the most frequent targets was the work of Christopher Nolan. The Dark Knight Rises was called out for being "too long, too brooding, and full of plot holes one can drive a truck through." Another user took aim at Nolan's more recent film, Oppenheimer, flatly stating, "Oppenheimer sucked too. Nolan is very clearly trending downward since The Dark Knight." A third user, discussing Nolan's Interstellar, argued that "If you look beyond the cool visuals, the plot makes no sense. It was a good movie for people who want to feel smart... but otherwise was a mid-tier sci-fi flick."
Beyond Nolan, the responses broadened to include other critically acclaimed films and directors. Sinners was a surprising addition to the list, with one user admitting, "Not garbage but Sinners was not some incredible movie. The characters weren’t built well, the story wasn’t that great, and it somehow felt rushed and long at the same time."
Perhaps the most controversial opinion came from a user who took aim at a titan of filmmaking. "Everything Stanley Kubrick’s ever done with the exception of The Shining. His portrayals of women are so egregiously sexist," the user wrote.
