On Saturday, at actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay's TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) rally in Tamil Nadu's Karur, a deadly stampede-like situation resulted in multiple deaths. At the time of writing, news reports have estimated the number as anywhere from 10 to 20. DMK Spokesperson Dr. Syed Hafeez told India Today that the situation was very worrying.
The incident is a shocker. Vijay's young party must find it hard to deal with the emotional distress caused by the tragedy. Vijay was addressing from a van in the middle of a street at the rally.
Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin reportedly spoke with two Ministers, the District Collector and others to undertake all measures to ensure timely treatment for the injured. Edappadi K Palaniswami of the AIADMk described the stampede as both shocking and distressing. "I express my deepest condolences and regret to the families of those who lost their lives," he wrote.
Thalapathy Vijay's next movie release is Jana Nayagan, to be released in theatres on 9 January 2026.
