Andhra King Taluka has been accused of ignoring deep issues concerning the fan culture. Far from questioning blind fanaticism and hero-worship of mortals, the film actually glorifies them.
Many feel that one of the key reasons the film has failed to become a hit at the box-office is because it is too simplistic and very conventional in its exploration of themes. "Audiences today are open to discovering dark themes on the big screen, and it's funny when filmmakers themselves are shying away from tough questions in the name of beautifying. I expected #AKT to delve into the toxicity of fanism, it was too superficial," says film journalist Aditya Devulapally.
Director Mahesh Babu P does touch upon the caste divide among fans in certain parts of Andhra Pradesh. However, the engagement is shallow. The director was clearly uninterested in offering social commentary. No character questions the risk-taking behaviour of Ram Pothineni's Sagar out of blind admiration for Upendra's Surya.
Andhra King Taluka marks a flop for Mythri Movie Makers after a blockbuster like Dude.
