In exclusive interviews with Variety and Collider, Mahesh Babu, SS Rajamouli, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran opened up about the ambitious action-adventure film 'Varanasi', set for global release on April 7, 2027. The humongous production, blending Indiana Jones and James Bond vibes with Indian roots, spans thousands of years across Antarctica, Africa, and Varanasi.
Here are the ten things we know about the movie so far.
1. 'Varanasi' is a globetrotting epic shot, following a time-travel mission involving a cosmic artifact. It will be a one-part movie.
2. Mahesh stars as protagonist Rudhra (a Shiva devotee warrior riding a bull with a trident) and Lord Rama in a direct Ramayana segment. He trained six months in posture, Kalari martial arts, and running style for authenticity.
3. In Kenya's Maasai Mara during wildebeest migration, the cast stood amid thousands of stampeding animals after being dropped off; the ground shook intensely. Shoots were animal-dependent. Elephants dictated timing and the crews could get only so much sleep. Rajamouli directed remotely via walkie-talkie.
4. Priyanka plays Mandakini and embraced the phonetic Telugu challenge despite not speaking the language. Rajamouli privately promised her "the best version" in every frame.
5. Prithviraj portrays antagonist Kumbha, a dangerously brilliant mind trapped in a wheelchair (all practical, no CGI). He conveys menace solely through facial expressions, creating a dichotomy of physical limits and unlimited mental threat.
6. Rajamouli loves villains to elevate heroes, insists on practical elements in a VFX-heavy film, and incorporates an actual Ramayana father-son episode.
7. The most important relationship in the film between a father and son is modelled on Rama and Dasharatha. Prakash Raj reportedly plays the father. Priyanka plays a mysterious thief named Mandakini.
8. There will be a song between Mahesh and Priyanka. It will be a dance number.
9. The glimpse released in November last year contained "Easter eggs". As per Priyanka, many fans correctly decoded some plot points from it.
10. About 50% of the shoot is completed. Netflix is believed to have secured digital rights for Rs 600 Cr.
