Kollywood's 1000 crore dream: These factors are holding it back

A Kollywood film observer recently asked netizens what they think about the Tamil film industry's inability to produce a Rs 1000 Cr movie.

Several movie buffs pointed to Tamil films spending too much on the fees of their heroes and directors, while too little goes into actual production. As a result, their films lack the visual aesthetic required to impress non-Tamil audiences.

Quite a few comments got to the root of the issue: content. Tamil films suffer from dated themes. Coolie was expected to be Kollywood's first Rs 1000 Cr movie, but it turned out to be just another revenge action drama relying heavily on Rajinikanth's meta image. On the other hand, movies like KGF 2 and Pushpa 2 offered unexpected elements/heroism.

Tamil films, for whatever reason, have acquired the image of obsessing with "oppression, depression and suppression" ideology. A netizen pointed out that they also lack aggressive marketing. "No actor wants to step up with promotions. Their movies have cringeworthy content," he added.

Action blocks need to be inventive. And the songs need to be out of the ordinary. On these two fronts, Kollywood is grossly uninventive. Devi Sri Prasad has more calibre to impress the Hindi audience than Anirudh Ravichander on the songs front.

Most Tamil directors seem to embark on production without a defined script. The second halves of most Tamil movies are bizarrely directionless these days.
