The DMK government plans to move a Bill that outlaws Hindi language in the state of Tamil Nadu. In effect, Hindi movies will stand banned unless they are dubbed into Tamil.
At the moment, Chief Minister MK Stalin is reportedly consulting legal experts to ensure that the Bill doesn't get struck down by the Centre on Constitutional grounds.
Many have joked that the government shouldn't ban Hindi-speaking heroines. "If this is true, though, let’s pray the ban doesn’t cover Hindi heroines. Without them, D-stock cinema would be robbed of its only surviving aesthetic element," wrote Prasanna Viswanathan.
Some voices see a clever election strategy ahead of the Pongal movie releases: Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan and Sivakarthikeyan's Parashakti. The latter is said to be a propaganda movie backed by the DMK ecosystem. "Based on true events, the story revolves around the Anti-Hindi agitations in Tamil Nadu that happened in 1965," Wikipedia says. "The DMK is hedging all its bets on Hindi. Their propaganda movie around the 1965 anti Hindi movement is timed for a Pongal release, at the same time as Vijay's movie. A few incidents of violence on locals by outsiders will also be orchestrated in the coming weeks," wrote Satish Viswanathan.
