The Karnataka Government's decision to fix movie ticket prices at a maximum of Rs 200, inclusive of entertainment tax, across all theaters, including multiplexes, is interesting. The public has 15 days from the publication date (15.07.2025) to submit objections or suggestions.
If the public is fine with the proposal, suitable amendments will be made to the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules, 2025. The new rules will come into force from the date of their final publication in the Official Gazette.
The government, critics argue, is "over-regulating a sector which is already facing intense competition from OTTs". Prashant Paleja wrote, "Cinema is not some essential service whose prices need to be regulated."
Most would be happy with the move."Affordable entertainment attracts more customers, leading to increased business and higher average spending. Movies have inspired countless dreams, lives, and motivated people to achieve greatness. Entertainment is a necessity of life, especially in today’s time when undeclared depression and loneliness affect many people without their knowledge. Great stories have the potential to inspire a whole generation to strive for better," wrote Parth Chaturvedi.
