The dubbed film market in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana continues to be a major force, with some Tamil blockbusters minting excellent numbers in the Telugu States. A new list of the top 5 highest-grossing Telugu-dubbed Tamil films in the region is due, with Coolie recently joining the list. All figures stated below are in Gross terms.
Leading the pack is Shankar's sci-fi spectacle, 2 Point O, which amassed a staggering Rs 93 crores. Its predecessor, Robot, also directed by Shankar, holds the third position with Rs 70 crores.
Superstar Rajinikanth's recent hit, Jailer, has secured the second spot with a remarkable Rs 84 crores.
Coolie is at No. 4, having minted Rs 60 crores, should have been a hit but it is not. Vikram's I (Manoharudu) rounded out the top five with Rs 53 crores.
While Coolie is at No. 4, it is a loss venture for distributors because of the super-high costs involved. Sun Pictures was ready to sell Coolie for Rs 30 crores a few months ago. Asian Suresh Entertainment delayed the purchase. As months passed, the price increased to Rs 50 crores. Coolie earned a share of less than Rs 40 crores.
