Elite, Sex Education: Are these Netflix dramas guilty of misrepresentation?

Recently, a viewer opined that teenagers in Netflix dramas "don't have homework to do, they just have sex, get cheated on and write an essay about it, then get selected for Harvard, Yale, Oxford". While it is a common satirical observation, it's an oversimplification rather than a literal truth.

While many popular Netflix teen dramas (like Elite, Sex Education, or 13 Reasons Why) do heavily feature themes of romance, relationships, and often intense personal struggles, there is more to them. Their characters frequently discuss school, classes, and future aspirations.

The first season of Sex Education was a massive hit, streamed by over 40 million households worldwide after its debut. The show has received widespread critical acclaim for its writing, acting, and mature handling of themes. It has also won awards, including a BAFTA TV Award for Best Female Comedy Performance and an International Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series. The first season of 13 Reasons Why was a cultural phenomenon. It became the second most-watched series on Netflix at the time of its release in 2017 and was the most tweeted-about show in the history of streaming television.
